SUMMER FUN: HOW TO DO IT SAFELY

Summertime Fun is a common refrain we frequently chant during the cold days of winter.  And while the heat is a welcome reprise from the cold weather, the sunshine of summer can pose risk to your hair.

The summer heat can lead to:

1. Dehydration: High temperatures, if not countered with hydration, can cause the weakening of hair follicles resulting in brittle hair shafts that become prone to breakage.

2. UV Exposure: Prolonged exposure to the sun's UV rays, absent the use of appropriate hair protection/covering can damage the scalp and hair follicles, leading to hair thinning and loss.

3. Sweat and Oil Buildup:  Higher heat more often than not leads to an increase in total body sweating.  A buildup of sweat paired with the excessive build up of oil on the scalp can potentially clog hair follicles thereby hindering hair growth.

4. Stress: Higher temperatures require our bodies to work harder.  This harder work increases our body’s exposure to stress.  Hair loss conditions like telogen effluvium are associated with stress.

For those who love to dip in the water !

Chlorine and salt water can have several effects on hair, but they are not directly linked to causing hair loss.

Here's how they can impact hair health:

CHLORINE

Dryness and Brittle Hair: Chlorine can strip natural oils from the hair, leading to dryness and making hair more prone to breakage.

Color Fading: For those with dyed hair, chlorine can cause the color to fade or change.

Irritation: Chlorine can irritate the scalp, leading to itchiness and discomfort.

SALT WATER

Dehydration: Salt water can dehydrate hair, making it dry and more prone to breakage.

Tangled Hair: The salt in the water can make hair tangled and harder to manage.

Scalp Irritation: Salt water can also cause scalp irritation and dryness.

While these effects can lead to hair damage and breakage, which might give the appearance of hair thinning, they do not directly cause hair loss from the follicle.

To minimize these effects:

- Rinse hair with fresh water before and after swimming.

- Use a swim cap to protect hair.

- Apply a leave-in conditioner or oil to create a barrier.

- Use gentle, moisturizing shampoos and conditioners.

To ensure that you reap the benefits of the summer heat and mitigate the potential negatives, you should:

- Stay hydrated to keep your hair follicles nourished.

- Wash your hair regularly to prevent sweat and oil buildup.

- Opt for loose-fitting, breathable hats to reduce scalp irritation.

- Manage stress through relaxation techniques or mindfulness practices.

Alleviate fatigue and swelling in the legs

Viparita Karani (legs up the wall)

Here is an amazing pose to help alleviate fatigue and swelling in the legs when it's hot outside or if you are spending many hours on your feet or after a long flight. This pose is also calming and relaxing and it improves circulation (both lymphatic and venous).

Come to the wall, sit down and one leg at a time, bring your legs up the wall as you make your way on your back. Be as close to the wall as possible but if you have some tightness in your hamstrings, move a bit away from it. Let your legs completely relax, close your eyes and focus on inhaling and exhaling through the nose. Stay in the pose for at least 5 minutes up to 15 minutes (feel free to use a timer).

Note: You can use the folded blankets under the low back as shown in the picture but if you feel any discomfort in the low back, remove the blankets. Have a blanket under the head only if your chin is higher than your forehead when lying on your back. And for more relaxation, you can use an eye pillow. Enjoy!!
